Moxabustion

What is Moxabustion?

Moxabustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy using moxa made from dried mugwort.

What it does?

Moxa is normally used to warm regions and meridian points with the intention of stimulating or reinforcing circulation through the points to promote Qi (body energy) and blood flow, and/or remove cold dampness that present at the region or on the meridian that blocks the Qi flow which may result in pain. Hence, other than Acupuncture, it is another effective way to relieve pain, for example joint pain especially caused by Arthritis.

Moxa also can treat conditions associated with the "cold" effectively, for example one of the reasons for infertility is due to cold uterus, so moxa can help to warm up the uterus and increase the changes of pregnancy.

Not only that, moxabustion is the best treatment method for chronic problems due to "deficient conditions" (weakness), for example fatigue where moxa can help to restore the body energy, same for those after surgery patients that feel weak, moxa can help to accelerate the recovery. The benefit of maxa can go on and on, patients can perform moxa themselves with the instruction from the practitioner, it is also good for health maintenance.

How it is done?

Moxabustion usually is done at the same time as acupuncture after the needles have been inserted. The practitioner holds the burning moxa stick approximately 2cm above the skin surface and pointing to the selected points or regions for the duration of 10 to 20 minutes. Patient should feel nice and warm at the heated areas.
